The Power Start Program supports families by providing a safe ride to school, opportunities for inclusion with peers, unique creative activities that prepare the body and mind to learn, grooming and a nutritious breakfast and recess snack. Children in the Power Start Program are picked up from their homes starting at 7:30 am by our dedicated staff and brought to their schools to begin their school readiness routine.

Children who take part in this program are selected by school staff members who feel these children are experiencing challenges in getting to school in the morning and therefore have high a rate of absenteeism. The Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops is committed to supporting children’s ability to pursue their education. Support for this program means that children are better prepared for and involved in class activities and show improved school attendance. Power Start aims to alleviate barriers for children to succeed and provide the support they need to do so. Providing a safe ride to school, proper nutrition, activities to wake up the body and mind, and care and support, these children are well prepared for their day at school.

This program has been very successful at two local elementary schools with the goal to expand to the greater Kamloops area. It directly addresses the high drop out rates for Kamloops children, a problem that begins in early grades. By supporting the Power Start program we are supporting Kamloops children to be successful in school and to reach their full potential.
